Requirements for Integrating Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education for the Transition to a Smart University: A Field Study of Taiz University

This study aims to assess the availability of the requirements for integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into higher education at Taiz University in the context of the transition toward a smart university. The descriptive-analytical method was employed, using a questionnaire as the primary tool for data collection from a sample of 112 faculty members and administrative leaders.
The findings revealed that the availability of the requirements for AI integration at the university was moderate. across most dimensions, with an overall mean score of 2.75, a standard deviation of 0.88, and a relative weight of 55%. Among the dimensions, educational applications of AI ranked first (M = 2.88, RW = 58%), followed by human resources (M = 2.79, RW = 55.8%), and funding and administrative support (M = 2.75, RW = 55.0%). Technical infrastructure ranked fourth (M = 2.70, RW = 54.0%), while institutional policies and regulations came last (M = 2.63, RW = 52.7%).
The results also indicated that challenges were at a high level (M = 3.81, RW = 76.2%), with the most critical being the shortage of qualified staff (92.2%), limited funding (84%), and lack of clarity in institutional policies and regulations (86.8%). Furthermore, no statistically significant differences were found based on job position or academic qualification. However, years of experience showed a significant effect in several key areas—technical infrastructure, institutional policies and regulations, and educational applications of AI—all in favor of faculty members with longer professional experience (>20 years).
The study recommends the formulation of a comprehensive institutional strategy to strengthen AI integration at Taiz University. This strategy should prioritize the development of technical infrastructure, the establishment of clear policies, the provision of sustainable funding, and investment in human resource development, while leveraging the expertise of senior faculty members to lead the transformation towards a smart university.
