Abstract

This research aimed to determine the effect of a program based on preventive educational support strategies on developing the achievement and motivation of low-achieving students in English. To achieve the research objectives, the researchers developed a program based on preventive educational support strategies consisting of (20) English language lessons and appropriate activities. They used a quasi-experimental design with a single group and a pre- and post-test. The research sample consisted of (40) male and female students from Al-Najah Asabih Basic and Secondary School in Al-Shamaitain District, Taiz Governorate, selected purposively. To measure the program's effect, the researchers developed a motivation scale consisting of (35) items distributed across (4) dimensions: (the impact dimension, the self-care and responsibility dimension, the interest in school activities dimension, and the motivation of the learning environment dimension). They also developed an observation checklist consisting of (17) items distributed across (3) axes: (motivation within the classroom, motivation related to performance and achievement, and motivation outside the classroom environment). After confirming its validity and reliability, it was applied before and after to the research participants, and the results showed the following: There is statistically significant differences at the significance level (α ≤ 0.05) between the mean scores of the pre- and post-application results on the scale for developing motivation towards learning English among low-achieving ninth-grade students, as the overall mean of the scale increased from (2.45) in the pre-application to (2.59) in the post-application, with a difference of (0.15), and an improvement rate of (2.9%), which indicates that the program based on preventive educational support strategies has contributed to improving the level of motivation to a limited degree.
