Abstract

The study aimed to examine the impact of understanding the meanings of Quranic vocabulary on the mastery of Quran memorization and the development of tajwid (rules of Qur’anic recitation) skills, specifically waqf (pausing or stopping at a word during recitation) and ibtida (resuming or beginning recitation after a pause) among elementary school students. To achieve this objective, the researcher employed the quasi-experimental method. The instruments used included a Memorization Proficiency Test and a Tajwid Skills Observation Checklist, both of which were verified for validity and reliability. The study sample consisted of 58 fourth-grade students from one of the schools in Unaizah Governorate. They were divided into two groups: the experimental group (n = 29) and the control group (n = 29). The main findings revealed a statistically significant difference at the level of (α ≤ 0.05) between the mean scores of the experimental and control groups in the post-test for both the Memorization Proficiency Test and the Tajwid Skills Observation Checklist, indicating that understanding the meanings of Quranic vocabulary positively influences memorization and the development of tajwid skills. In light of these results, the study recommended, among other suggestions, the development and design of integrated instructional units that connect memorization, understanding, and tajwid. This includes teaching Quranic vocabulary along with simplified explanations appropriate for the learners’ developmental stage. It further recommended teacher training through the organization of workshops aimed at equipping teachers with engaging methods for explaining Quranic vocabulary to young learners.
